Concord and Elkhart Central win bowling team sectional titles

The Michiana Central Conference concluded its season with Sectional Championships held Saturday and Sunday January 25th and 26th at Country Club Lanes in Elkhart. The Concord girls and Elkhart Central boys were upset winners, both defeating Elkhart Memorial teams that dominated much of the regular season competition while seniors Jacob Tucker from Memorial and Brianna Ferro from Jimtown nailed down singles titles.
In the qualifying round consisting of two regular and 5 Baker team games Concord earned the 3rd and final Regional spot qualifying behind Elkhart Memorial and Jimtown. In the stepladder roll-off for the Sectional title Concord first defeated Jimtown in the two-game Baker style match 338-256. The Minutemen then topped Memorial 317-256 to take the title. All three teams advance to the Fort Wayne Regional Saturday February 1st.
Elkhart Memorial topped qualifying for the boys teams earning the top seed over Central and Jimtown. Central grabbed the title by first defeating Jimtown 367-286 then topping Memorial in both games to earn a 401-364 victory and the Sectional trophy. All three teams advance to the Regional.
In girls Singles competition Jimtown senior Brianna Ferro dominated qualifying posting a 660 series which was 101 pins better than the next best qualifying score. The top 11 girls advanced to the Regional with the top 4 making the stepladder roll-off for the Sectional title. In match one Memorial’s Megan Best bested Northridge’s Lindsay Meade 177-155. Best then topped team mate Paige Weldy 222-195 advancing to face Ferro in the title match with Ferro taking the title by a single pin 194-193.
Boys singles qualifying was led by Central’s Walter Griffin III’s 663 series with the top 11 also advancing to Regional. The stepladder roll-off saw Central’s Thiler Claxton defeat Concord’s Vaughn Schroeder 240-165 in match one. Claxton then fell to Memorial Sr. Jacob Tucker 195-171. Tucker then went on to defeat Griffin 221-174 to take earn the title. Northridge team mates Josh Garfein and Michael Schlabach tied for the final qualifying spot with 566 series’. A 9th-10th frame roll off won 47-24 by Garfein gave him the final Regional spot.
Those advancing will compete in the Fort Wayne Regional Saturday February 1st at Georgetown Bowl. Singles competition begins at 9am with team competition following at 1pm. Teams and individuals in the Regional will be competing for spots in the Fort Wayne Semi-State to be held February 8th at Pro Bowl West. Indiana High School Bowling competition then concludes with the State Finals on February 15th from Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.
