Conference play begins for local high school bowling teams

Regular season conference play kicks off at Country Club Lanes.

The Michiana Central High School Bowling Conference regular season kicked off Tuesday, Oct. 22 with opening round matches at Country Club Lanes.

Elkhart Memorial, Elkhart Central and Jimtown, which all call Country Club Lanes home, won all but one of their matches.

Memorial asserted itself as the early favorite in both the boys and girls divisions with convincing wins. Coach Seth Tucker’s boys and Coach Chuck Wilson’s girls both return very talented leadership from their teams which won the conference titles last season.

Boys recap

Jimtown defeated NorthWood 19-1. Joey Juday 196-209 (405) led Jimtown while Christian Zentz 144-235 (379) led NorthWood.

Memorial defeated Northridge 16-4. Jacob Tucker’s sizzling 246-265 (511), along with Danden Solomon’s 160-223 (383) led Memorial, while Jarrett Thomas 194-154 (348) and Michael Schlabach 193-150 (343) led Northridge.

Central defeated Concord 15-5, led by Walter Griffin III 199-214 (413) and Thiler Claxton 193-184 (377). Kenny Baltimore’s 191-215 (406) led for Concord.

Goshen defeated Fairfield 19-1 with Grant Kercher 175-189 (364) and Ryan Meade 100-245 (345) leading the way. Matt Taylor’s 230-180 (410) led a short roster for Fairfield.

Central as the draw team defeated Wawasee 18.5 – 1.5. Dylan Steele was the top scorer for Wawasee with 169-144 (313).

Girls recap

Jimtown defeated NorthWood 18-2 with Brianna Ferro’s 184-179 (363) leading the way. Drew Holderman paced NorthWood with 168-148 (316).

Memorial defeated a short Northridge team 19-1. Paige Weldy 183-152 (335) and Megan Best 173-164 (337) led Memorial with the win. Kelly Soard 166-113 (279) led Northridge, who will get their remaining team members back this week with marching band season now complete.

Concord defeated Central 18-2 with Kathryn Lantz 158-192 (350) and Haley Garcia 171-199 (370) leading the way. Lizzy Glaser paced Central with 183-169 (352).

Goshen defeated a very shorthanded Fairfield team 19-1. Rachel Horning 166-147 (313) and Sara Vincze 171-133 (304) were the top two players for Goshen, while Kassi Rosenberry 136-199 (335) was Fairfield’s lone bowler.

Central as the draw team defeated Wawasee 20-0. Sidney Fisher 98-100 (198) led Wawasee.

Week two competition takes place Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Signature Lanes. Goshen faces Memorial, NorthWood versus Concord, Jimtown takes on Wawasee and Fairfield tests Northridge. In the draw matches, Central boys post scores against NorthWood while Central’s girls oppose Memorial. Matches start at 4:30 p.m.

If you’ve never attended a high school match this would be a great one to come see, with plenty of room for spectators and what will surely be an energetic atmosphere.
