A place to escape in downtown Elkhart

Even if you’re not going to have the chance to get out of town for a summer vacation, there are spots around the area that can provide the serenity time off brings – like Wellfield Botanic Gardens.

“My best vacation is somewhere I could hide, somewhere warm and not a lot of people around.” – Derek Jeter

Summer is finally here. In February and March it didn’t seem like June or July would ever arrive. But the warmth of the sun is now beating down on Elkhart County, kids are splashing in pools, families are lining up outside ice cream shops and people are getting prepared for their summer vacation.

Wellfield Botanic Gardens is an organization in Elkhart dedicated to promoting the inseparable relationship between water, plants and animals. To read more from its staff and volunteers, visit the gardens’ blog, Make Your Place.

The purpose of a vacation is to escape from the daily grind, recharge your batteries and possibly even experience or see something for the very first time. For many, this means visiting a destination that’s far away from here. Whether it’s visiting Disney Land, the Grand Canyon, camping in the mountains of Tennessee or spending a week in a cottage off of Lake Michigan, most people are eager to find some time to get away for a few days during the summer months.

You don’t have to wait for a vacation to enjoy a refreshing respite from work and home stresses. Right here in our own community there are places to escape and relax. Wellfield Botanic Gardens is placing the finishing touches on an Adventure Path, a Sensory Garden, a Volunteer Garden and a Waterfall Garden while beginning work on an Asian Island Garden and a beautiful West Promenade along Christiana Creek.

There are few places more serene and energizing than standing in the pavilion located in our new Waterfall Garden. Water is all around, with views of the Old Beardsley Mill Pond, South Pond, Bucklen Dam and a waterfall along Christiana Creek. The combined influence of the sounds of water and the vivid plant displays results in a sense of calm that often can’t even be found on a vacation.

If you don’t want to wait for your summer vacation to recharge your batteries, you just might find that spending an hour or two in our Pergola Garden or Waterfall Garden along Christiana Creek will provide all the escape and rest you need. We hope to see you in the gardens soon.
