Free things to do in Michiana this weekend

Pick up locally-grown produce at the Woodlawn Nature Center Harvest Market, perform at an open mic event at Niles District Library or attend any of these other free events in Michiana this weekend.

Friday 

The Art of George Vagis

When : 10 a.m. on Friday, May 23.

Where : Buchanan Art Center at 117 W. Front Street in Buchanan, Michigan.

The Buchanan Art Center will display the works of Hoosier artist George Vagis. Vagis specializes in pen, ink and pencil and “has developed a distinctive technique that achieves almost photographic realism, while at the same time retaining the rugged feel and appearance so much sought after in works of this type”, according to the Buchanan Art Center’s website.

 

Harvest Market’s opening day at the Woodlawn Nature Center

When : 1 p.m. on Friday, May 23.

Where : Woodlawn Nature Center at 603 Woodlawn Avenue in Elkhart.

The Woodlawn Nature Center’s 7th annual Harvest Market will begin on Friday, May 23. You can pick up fresh, locally-grown produce, plants, homemade treats and handmade items. The market will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. until October 11.

 

Make Some Noise: Open Mic Night

When : 6 p.m. on Friday, May 23.

Where : Niles District Library at 620 E. Main Street in Niles, Mich.

The Niles District Library is hosting an open mic night to celebrate their new community space. Adult and teenage entertainers can perform twice each night. Each performance is limited to five minutes. You can also request for more time by registering ahead of time. There will also be free coffee and soda. The open mic will be a monthly event throughout this summer.

 

Free kids movie in Central Park behind Civic Plaza

When: 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 23

Where: Central Park behind Civic Plaza

Despicable Me will play in the park and is presented to honor mentoring programs that serve the community. The event is open to the public and free of charge.

 

Saturday 

Memorial Day Weekend

When : Saturday, May 24, to Monday, May 26.

Where : Amish Acres Historical Farm & Heritage Resort at 1600 W. Market Street in Nappanee.

The Amish Acres Historical Farm & Heritage Resort will host a Memorial Day weekend, which includes a variety of family-friendly activities such as a flag coloring contest and a lesson on how the American flag has changed throughout history.

 

Through An Artist’s Eye

When : 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 24, and Sunday, May 25.

Where : South Bend Museum of Art at 120 St. Joseph Street in South Bend.

The South Bend Museum of Art will be displaying some of their recent acquisitions to their permanent collection beginning Saturday, May 24. These works will be displayed in the Jerome J. Crowley Community Gallery.

 

Several local organizations will also be hosting Memorial Day events on Monday,
