It’s summer time, and that means that it’s garage sale season.

It’s also time when buying and selling items on Craigslist or through Facebook garage sale groups becomes more popular.

But selling things online can also be dangerous.

Elkhart County Sheriff Brad Rogers offered some tips on his Facebook wall Wednesday night, May 21, about how to be safe when meeting potential buyers and sellers from the Internet.

"Don't meet the customer at your home,” he wrote. “Meet your customer at a busy parking lot, preferably one with camera surveillance” such as Walmart or Meijer.

Rogers also suggests taking a picture of the person you are meeting, their car and their license plate on your cell phone and says you can do it subtly, if necessary.

The sheriff added that taking pictures and meeting in a location where there are cameras can be helpful in case the buyer or seller attempts to rob or scam the other person.

Have you ever purchased anything from Craigslist or a similar site? What are your safety tips for online buying and selling?
