Memorial Day 2014: Here's what's going on in Elkhart and Cass counties

Find out when the parades and other events honoring fallen soldiers will be in Elkhart and Cass counties.

Local organizations are getting ready to commemorate fallen soldiers on Monday, May 26. Here are the events that are happening in Elkhart and Cass counties on Memorial Day:

ELKHART

The Disabled American Veterans post in Elkhart will have a ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at Rice Cemetery following the ceremony, the public is invited to join the DAV for refreshments at 1205 Middleton Run Road.

The Parade starts at 2 p.m. on Main Street at Harrison Street. The parade will go down Main Street until it reaches Lexington Street.

The Daughters of the American Revolution Williams Tuffs Chapter of Elkhart will be laying a wreath in honor of the Revolutionary War veterans buried in Elkhart County at 12:45 p.m. Monday at the Elkhart City Municipal Building, 229 S.Second St.

The Elkhart Lion’s Club will display its annual Flags from the Heart Project in Elkhart’s Central Park for three days beginning Saturday.

 

GOSHEN 

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Goshen Post will hold several events Monday morning in observance of Memorial Day. The VFW will have a service at 8:45 a.m. at the Rogers Park foot bridge, 102 Chicago Ave. 

A second service will take place at 9 a.m. at the War Memorial outside the Elkhart Courthouse in Goshen. Lineup for the parade will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the parade will kick off at 10:15 a.m. at the intersection of Fifth and Jefferson streets.

The parade will go to Oak Ridge Cemetery, where a ceremony will start at 11 a.m. 

 

NAPPANEE

The City of Nappanee will have its annual Memorial Day parade Monday, starting with lineup at 10 a.m. The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. at Nappanee Elementary and ends at City Hall, 300 W. Lincoln St. A memorial service will continue at 11 a.m.

 

MIDDLEBURY

The Middlebury American Legion Post will have a Dusk to Dawn Vigil on Sunday, at Gracelawn Cemetery. Members of the legion will place lights on all veterans’ graves and stand guard Sunday night into Monday morning. The public is invited to visit the cemetery and read the names of the veterans buried there.

The Middlebury Memorial Day Parade will take place Monday, starting at 10 a.m. in front of the Middlebury Elementary School on Main Street and ending at Memorial Park. A program will follow at the park. 

Following the program, the legion will lead the public to Grace Cemetery, where they will read the names of all the veterans buried there. 

 

OSCEOLA

The Osceola Business Association will host the First Parade of the Day, with lineup starting at 7 a.m. along Osceola Avenue Rogers Street, and kicking off at 8 a.m. 

Tailgating is encouraged, according to a press release from the Osceola Business Association. 

 

EDWARDSBURG

The parade starts at 11 a.m. at the Edwardsburg Middle School. A flag service will take place half-way through the parade near the Edwardsburg Historical Museum. 

The Memorial Day Festival will follow at Gunn Park.
