The League of American Bicyclists is encouraging workers to strap on their bike helmets for National Bike To Work Week from May 12 to 16.

More than half of all Americans live within five miles of their workplace, the league stated. The number of people who bike to work has increased about 60 percent in the past decade, according to recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Elkhart County bicyclists can join the Bike Michiana Coalition online to earn points for calories burned and the number of days they ride.

One local organization is hosting its own Bike to Work Week this year. Michiana Bike to Work Week is June 8 to 14. Throughout the week, they’ll host events like Bike the Bend and a bike movie night at The State Theater.

Tell us: How often do you ride your bike to work? Is it easy to get to your place of work on a bike? How bike friendly do you think Elkhart County is compared to other areas?
