Letter carriers across Elkhart County picked up 7,300 pounds of food during its annual food drive Saturday, May 10.

The food was collected from residents who place non-perishable food items near their mailboxes early Saturday morning. The donations will be distributed to 14 area food pantries.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive has collected 80,000 pounds of food in Elkhart County over the past 10 years with the help of the United Way of Elkhart County.

Darren Bickel, vice president of investment at the United Way of Elkhart County, said spirits were high during the drive.

"Thousands of families across the county will benefit from the food that was raised today. Elkhart County can be proud of its generosity," he wrote in an email.

Part of the annual food drive is a friendly competition among local municipalities to see who can raise the most food. Elkhart County raised the most food, Goshen raised the most dollars and Goshen's giving was the highest per capita.

Elkhart County residents can drop off additional donations for the drive until Wednesday at any post office, Bickel said.
