Free things to do in Michiana this weekend

Time for Art

Where: Ivy Tech Community College’s School of Fine Arts and Design gallery at 220 Dean Johnson Blvd. in South Bend

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2

Description: Ivy Tech Community College’s School of Fine Arts and Design gallery in South Bend is holding an exhibition showcasing the work of two “non-traditional college students,” Diane Sarnat and Marsha Brook. Both students retired from their previous careers and returned to college to study fine arts. Sarnat and Brook’s work reflects their personal experiences as expressed through different artistic mediums.


Downtown South Bend First Fridays: Vintage Downtown

Where: Downtown South Bend, 217 S. Michigan St. in South Bend

When: 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2

Description: Catch musical performances, a car show, a horse carriage ride and participate in other fun activities during Downtown South Bend’s monthly First Friday event. The theme for this month's First Friday is Vintage Downtown.


Spring Fling at Fire Arts

Where: Fire Arts, Inc., 305 East Colfax in South Bend

When: 5 p.m. on Friday, May 2

Description: Artists with Fire Arts, Inc., will be exhibiting some of their new spring-themed artwork at the Spring Fling event on Friday. There will also be a Fire Arts, Inc., artist in the studio that evening.


Plowboys and Hotdogs at City Church

Where: Goshen City Church of the Brethren at 203 N. 5th Street in Goshen

When: 5:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2

Description: Goshen College’s “The Noisy Plowboys” will be performing at the Goshen City Church of the Brethren on Friday. They will be performing a selection of bluegrass and Irish tunes as well as original compositions.


Noye's Fludde (Noah's Flood)

Where: 221 Hesburgh Library in Notre Dame

When: 8:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2

Description: The Notre Dame Children’s Choir will stage a performance of Benjamin Britten’s children’s opera “Noye’ Fludde” (or Noah's Flood) around the Hesburgh Library reflecting pool on the University of Notre Dame campus. The event invites audience participation when singing and blowing bubbles.


Little League opening days

Description: Middlebury was scheduled for Friday, May 2, while Baugo, Bristol, Cleveland, Elkhart FOP/IAFF Heroes Park and Goshen (Minor A and Rookies) was slated for morning or mid-day on Saturday, May 3. Opening days took place last weekend at Osolo. Concord has scheduled opening day for Saturday, May 10.

Hoosier Riverwatch Volunteer Monitor Training

Where: St. Patrick's County Park at 50651 Laurel Rd. in South Bend

When: 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3

Description: Hoosier Riverwatch will hold a training session which will teach participants about how to monitor water quality and collect and identify aquatic insects.


Xpanding Horizons Xpo

Where: The State Theater at 214 1/2 S Michigan St. in South Bend

When: 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3

Description: Meet with psychic readers, pick up handcrafted jewelry or attend an interdenominational service at the Xpanding Horizons Xpo in South Bend.


Beginners Bird Walk

Where: Wild Birds Unlimited at 6502 N Grape Rd., Suite 842 in Mishawaka

When: 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 3

Description: Learn how to watch birds in their natural habitats with Wild Birds Unlimited‘s event in Mishawaka.


5th Annual Cinco de Mayo Celebration

Where: Civic Plaza in downtown Elkhart

When: 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 3

Description: Celebrate the fifth annual Cinco De Mayo Festival in Elkhart.


Free Comic Book Day

Where : Knappy's Komics & Kollectibles at 513 East Mckinley Ave. and Buymetoys.com at 4615 Grape Rd., Suite C in Mishawaka

Description: Pick up free comic books at two Mishawaka comic book stores on Friday. This year’s selection includes DC ComicsNew 52: Future's End, which features a futuristic Batman, and Marvel ComicsGuardians of the Galaxy, which will make its cinematic debut later this year.

Cinco de Mayo Fiesta

Where: Rum Village Park at 2626 S. Gertrude in South Bend

When: 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 4

Description: The Latin American Chamber of Commerce and the South Bend Police Athletic League are presenting a festival that will include musical performances, food and community outreach groups.


Beer and Loathing (in South Bend) - Lowbrow Art Show

Where : Stillhouse Tattoo & Piercing at 50921 State Road 933 in South Bend

When : 4:20 p.m. on Sunday, May 4

Description: The Michiana Beard Mustache-Club will hold an art show in South Bend, which will feature artwork, musical performances and handmade knives and hatchets.
