People across the country are celebrating National Pretzel Day on Saturday, April 26, in honor of those delicious, knotted breads flavored with salt.

There are a number of shops and restaurants in Elkhart County where you can bite down on a delicious pretzel. There’s Jo Jo’s Pretzels in Shipshewana, and the Iechyd Da Brewery and Pumpernickel’s Pretzel Bakery & Sandwich Shop (open Mondays to Fridays) in Elkhart.

Ben’s Soft Pretzels in both Goshen and Elkhart will be giving out coupons for free pretzels in conjunction with National Pretzel Day. While the coupons are only valid for your next visit to the store, who can argue with free pretzels?

If you think you can tie a tastier knot of pretzel in your own kitchen, Iron Chef America and Cutthroat Kitchen host Alton Brown has recipes for hard and soft pretzels as well as a side of mustard on the Food Network’s website.

It’s one thing to get the right ratio of liquid to flour, but how do you get that signature chewy crust of a pretzel right? theKitchn writes that the secret is dipping your pretzels in an alkaline water bath before baking. They also have step-by-step instructions for how to shape your lump of dough into the perfect classic pretzel knot.

What's your favorite kind of pretzel?
