Elkhart Civic Theatre presents Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The 39 Steps’
BRISTOL — Elkhart Civic Theatre is putting its actors to the test with a comedic production of “The 39 Steps,” a story adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and a movie from Alfred Hitchcock.
With a cast of just four actors playing the roles of roughly 100 characters, this spy story is thrilling and zany. The play will hit the stage at 8 p.m. April 25, April 26, May 2 and May 3, with matinees at 3 p.m. April 27 and May 4 at the Bristol Opera House, 210 E. Vistula St.
“Prepare to suspend your disbelief with the master of suspense – Alfred Hitchcock,” director Dave Dufour said in a news release. “You won’t be disappointed when you see this show. This comedy gives our actors a chance to stretch and grow more than many shows that we’ve produced. It allows them a chance to play and to create a multitude of characters. In fact, two of the actors, called the Clowns, get a chance to play almost 100 distinct characters.”
The veteran cast is headed by Kevin Egelsky of Elkhart playing the lead character, Richard Hannay, a man of action who happens to be in the wrong place at just the right time. Playing the three women who change his life over the period of a few short days is Annette Kaczanowski of Elkhart. Rounding out the cast of about 100 characters from milk men to henchmen are the Clowns, Dave Kempher of South Bend and Michael Honderich of Goshen.
Helping Dufour with direction is his assistant director, Randy Zonker. Garry Cobbum designed the sound, and Linda Wiesinger coordinated costumes, with Zonker on lighting design. The crew in charge of keeping this multitude of characters organized includes Angie Berkshire, Elise Davis, Karen Johnston, Corrine Reed and Kasey Roske, with Stephanie Isley running the lights.
Tickets are $17 for adults and $15 for students and seniors 62 and older. For reservations call 574-848-4116 from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, or visit elkhartcivictheatre.org.
