Around Area Farms

The Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District is planning a forestry field day at the John and Carol Ulmer farm on Saturday, Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon. The farm is located between C.R. 32 and C.R. 36 on Old C.R. 17.

This is a great site for a forestry field day. John and Carol have developed this beautiful site, with acres of hardwoods, conifers, ponds, and plenty of wildlife. It should be a day of fun and information, with three tracks to follow during the day.

One track will include traditional forest management, including tree planting, selection and planning for a timber harvest. A second track includes innovative practices such as permaculture and pond management. A family track will include a woodland scavenger hunt and catch-and-release fishing. There will be information about pest control, including emerald ash borer.
