SHIPSHEWANA Annual Ice Festival slated for the end of December

The annual Shipshewana Ice Festival, featuring large ice sculptures carved by the Michiana Ice Carvers Association, will be from Dec. 27 to 29.

Carvers will begin at 9 a.m. Dec. 27 and work throughout the day using a combined 30,000 or more pounds of ice for 40 sculptures in shapes ranging from animals and toys to popular people and nostalgic food. At 6 p.m., the Westview senior girls will compete in a new festival event, the Ice Festival Pageant, in the Davis Mercantile Theater.

Ten master carvers will compete in a carving contest for cash prizes from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 28 near the south entrance of the Davis Mercantile on Harrison Street, downtown.

The Chili Cook-off will be in the Davis Mercantile parking lot from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Dec. 29. Interested contestants may call the event sponsor at (260) 463-6175 for more information. Public may attend and taste, roast marshmallows and build a snowman.
