8th Annual Middlebury Walks for a Cure

The 8th Annual Middlebury Walks for a Cure breast cancer walk will take place Sunday, Oct. 7, 2012.

Posted on Oct. 3, 2012 at 1:00 a.m.

On Sunday, October 7, people will come together in Middlebury to walk in memory of those they’ve lost to breast cancer. They will walk in honor of those who are fighting breast cancer. And, they will walk so their children will not have to.

Nean Smith started Middlebury Walks for a Cure in 2005 to help other women in their battle against breast cancer after battling it herself.

The funds raised will help pay for patient care provided by United Cancer Services of Elkhart and mammogram screenings provided by The Retreat Women’s Health Center at Indiana University Health Goshen.

Last year 1,000 people participated and raised over $40,000.

“We were told that we provided 73 mammograms at the Retreat,” said Smith.

Registration for Sunday’s walk starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Essenhaus Inn and Conference Center, with the 5K walk and run beginning at 2 p.m. There will also be a 1K fun walk.

Particpants can enjoy vendor booths, refreshments, door prizes and a raffle, and are encouraged to dress up in their most creative pink outfit for a chance to win a prize.

“ADEC’s Gaining Grounds coffee shop will serve coffee for the walk,” said Smith.

Breast cancer survivors will lead the walk and receive a special gift.

Traci Runge with Super Cure will be the keynote speaker. In honor of a friend who was battling breast cancer, Runge, a Carmel resident, donated her healthy breast tissue to the Komen Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis. Three years later, Runge was diagnosed with breast cancer. Before she began treatment, she donated again, giving the tissue bank its first pair of healthy and cancerous tissue samples from the same donor.

The tissue bank is the only repository of healthy breast tissue in the world and allows researchers to study how breast cancer forms so they can find a cure. Runge has become a spokesperson for the tissue bank.

“She is an amazing person,” said Smith. “I am excited to hear what she has to say. She is passionate about women getting mammograms.”
