LoveWay Therapeutic Equestrian Services is having an open house to celebrate the arrival of a new 2-year-old Gypsy Vanner horse named Megalomanic.

LoveWay uses therapeutic interaction with horses to help those with special needs gain improved physical, mental, emotional and social abilities. LoveWay was gifted the horse by LexLin Gypsy Ranch in Tennessee through a contest on Facebook.

“We are a member of the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International, and in their February newsletter, I saw that there was an opportunity to win a Gypsy horse from LexLin Gypsy Ranch, so I entered LoveWay into the competition,” said Shelley Becker, development associate and PATH certified instructor with LoveWay.

“Fifty centers were in competition for one of five horses,” Becker said. “We put the word out to our volunteers, teachers, student riders and on Facebook and our webpage to vote for us, and our community really came through. We were the second place winner with around 9,600 votes.”

“Gypsy Vanner horses are known for their docile temperament and strength, which makes Megalomanic a great addition to LoveWay. Horses normally go through an adjustment period when they come to a new facility, but Megalomanic has fit right into our routine,” said Becker. “Gypsy Vanner horses are rare. There are only 3,500 in the United States, so a non-profit wouldn’t normally be able to afford such a horse. We are so grateful to everyone that took the time to vote every day to ensure we could bring home a quality horse.”

The open house will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, allowing people to meet Megalomanic and LoveWay’s staff. There will also be goodies to enjoy, donated by Sugarush.

“It’s also a great opportunity for those who have heard of LoveWay, but don’t really know what we do, to visit us,” said Becker. “We will have tours of our facility, kids’ games, and people can meet Megalomanic and all of our horses.”

LoveWay is located at 54151 C.R. 33 in Middlebury. You can visit their website at www.lovewayinc.org.
