Man hits two police cars during chase

A man struck two police cars during a chase that reached speeds of 80 mph Monday, Aug. 18.

Around 11:45 p.m. Monday, police were told about a vehicle off the roadway on U.S. 20 near C.R. 33 in Elkhart County. 

When a police officer arrived, a silver Saturn passenger car was seen driving through a yard, across a driveway and striking a tree, according to a release from the Middlebury Police Department.

The vehicle then fled eastbound at U.S. 20 at around 80 mph.

The vehicle struck a LaGrange city police car at the intersection of U.S. 20 and S.R. 5. 

Continuing southbound on S.R. 5 and entering Noble County, the vehicle crossed over the east side of the roadway and struck a Noble County police car. The vehicle ran over stop sticks and lost three of its four tires, according to the release.

After the vehicle was stopped on 1000 North at 1025 West in Noble County, the driver, Jonathan Gaby, 31, refused to comply with police orders, according to the release.

He was Tasered by a LaGrange County police officer and taken into custody. Gaby was then taken to a hospital and was later released.

His blood alcohol content before being released was .233 percent according to police. 

Gaby faces preliminary charges of reckless driving, felony fleeing and operating while intoxicated, according to the release. He was jailed at the Elkhart County jail.
