GOSHEN — The annual Leprechaun Leap, a fundraiser for United Cancer Services of Elkhart County, has moved down to Goshen this year.

The fundraiser, which included a freezing dip in the Simonton Lake and a St. Patrick's Day party, had been held at Pete's Simonton Lake Tavern for the last 8 years, said Peter Norton, executive director of United Cancer Services of Elkhart County.

Pete's was unable to host the party this year, so organizers had to find another location.

"It was pretty challenging because you need to find a facility that can host a big party and also has water and a dock," Norton said.

This year's leap will be held Saturday, March 15, at the Goshen Moose Lodge, 388 Johnston St.

Norton said the lodge is well-equipped to host the event with good indoor space, outdoor pavilion and a pond with a dock and a beach.

Doors open at 11 a.m. and the leap begins at 2 p.m.

"You don't have to leap to come to the party," Norton said.

There will be a cash bar, food and live music to entertain those not willing to brave the chilly waters of the pond.

In past years, about 500 to 600 people turn out for the party, but Norton said they have had as many as 1,200 attendees when the weather was unseasonably warm.

Pledge forms for people taking the leap are available online at elkhartcancer.org.
