Goshen's Elise Goodman crowned Miss Collegiate Indy

Elise Goodman will compete for Miss Indiana title in June

GOSHEN — A Goshen resident recently won the title of Miss Collegiate Indy.

Elise Goodman, 21, was crowned Saturday, Feb. 8, and will compete for the Miss Indiana title June 15-22 in Zionsville.

During the Miss Collegiate Indy competition, Goodman showcased her talent of Latin jazz dance and spoke about her platform of promoting a positive self-image to adolescent girls.

Goodman has previously held the title of Elkhart County 4-H Fair Queen in 2010 and was Miss Elkhart County in 2012.

The newly crowned Miss Collegiate Indy took time Thursday, Feb. 13, to answer a few questions from The Elkhart Truth by email.

How does it feel to be named Miss Collegiate Indy?

"It is an absolute honor to be named Miss Collegiate Indy 2014! I was competing with some amazing women and I am so excited to return to Miss Indiana in June!"

Where does this honor fall in relation to your also being named Fair Queen and Miss Elkhart County?

"Becoming a titleholder in any pageant is quite the responsibility and every title is very different. As the 4-H Fair Queen in 2010, I acted as an ambassador of sorts for the fair itself. As Miss Elkhart County 2014, I was a titleholder for the Miss America Organization which is the same pageant circuit that Miss Collegiate Indy was crowned. I represented our county exclusively at the Miss Indiana pageant as Miss Elkhart County, while I represent all Indianapolis area colleges who do not have their own pageant as Miss Collegiate Indy."

How long have you been dancing and why did you select Latin Jazz dancing as your talent?

"One of the most important areas of competition through the Miss America Organization is talent. I have danced since I was 5 and have studied tap, jazz, ballet, and modern. I decided to choreograph a Latin jazz dance because I just wanted to have fun! It is just a little outside of my comfort zone, but I had a blast dancing to an upbeat song and choreographing Latin moves made the dance very enjoyable to the audience."

Why did you choose the platform you did?

"I currently work with my platform of promoting a positive self-image to adolescent girls. This platform means a lot to me personally because of my own experiences I had as a young girl. I believe this is one of the biggest issues young women face today and every girl deserves to feel confident in everything she does!"

What are you doing or planning to do to work at your platform?

"As Miss Collegiate Indy I hope to visit area schools to speak with girls about a positive self-image. I have a very powerful story to tell and this is a topic that is very difficult for many to speak of, which is all the more reason to spread awareness!"
