Hundreds of people flocked to downtown Elkhart over the weekend to attend the 2014 Elkhart Jazz Festival - and some people even crossed the Atlantic Ocean to get there.

Elkhart Truth reporters asked festival goers where they traveled from to see musicians such as Aaron Neville and Preservation Hall Jazz Band to perform. Most attendees said they were from Elkhart, Goshen, Osceola, Granger, Bristol, Edwardsburg, Mich., and other nearby towns.

Others, however, cited hometowns as far away as San Diego, Calif. Some attendees even traveled from New Orleans, La., also known as the birthplace of jazz.

David Smith, one of the three co-chairs of the Elkhart Jazz Festival and executive director of The Lerner Theatre, said he knew of two specific groups of people who traveled from England.

“There are people from four different countries and 22 states,” Smith said. “There’s two groups I know of from England; we have people from California, Oregon, Virginia, Florida, Louisiana.”
