Jazz musician and teacher Darrel Tidaback explained his love of jazz in preview for high school concerts at the Elkhart Jazz Festival.

IUSB Jazz Ensemble director Darrel Tidaback plays the stand-up bass, and he’ll be playing with Elkhart Central High School during the Jazz Festival on Saturday, June 21.

"What drew me to jazz is the freedom of expression. To say what I want to say at that moment in that piece of music,“ Tidaback said.

As for playing with Central’s All Star Jazz group, he said he wants younger musicians to experience the magic of playing in a group.

"When you play in a group, there’s this...” he paused, waiving his hands in the air and searching for the right words.“Vulcan mind meld that happens amongst the players. When it’s really on, it’s an experience like no other.”

See the schedule below to see when and where other area high school bands are playing, and to find out which jazz musician they’re playing with.
