The pier at Six Span Bridge is no more.

The aluminum structure recently was removed by the Elkhart County Highway Department after damage by boaters rendered it unusable, according to Frank Lucchese, Elkhart County commissioner.

“It really should’ve lasted a long time being aluminum, but people either just don’t care or don’t pay attention,” he said, referencing boaters who have allowed their crafts to run into the pier.

The structure was installed several years ago between the ramps at the boat launch on River Launch Court, east of C.R. 17 off S.R. 120 near McDonald's.

“We’re looking into maybe making a permanent pier, so if someone decides to run into it like they do now, it will damage their boat and not the pier,” Lucchese said.

It’s unlikely that the pier will be replaced this year.
