ELKHART — After 18 women showcased their talents and personalities during the 2015 Distinguished Young Women of Elkhart program on Saturday, Aug. 16, at Concord High School, Alexandra Downs was named the winner.
Alexandra, of Elkhart Central, was awarded $2,500 in cash scholarships. Alex will attend University of North Carolina to study pediatric oncology, Julie Dilorenzo, executive director for Elkhart’s Distinguished Young Women, said.
In addition, Alex advanced to the state level and will attend the 2015 Indiana Distinguished Young Women program next February in Kokomo, Dilorenzo said.
The program has five components, including academics, fitness, talent, poise and an interview.
For her talent, Alex performed a ballet routine, Dilorzeno said.
Joining Alex among the top five were first runner-up Amanda Dibley, second runner-up Shelby Thompson, third-runner up Lexi Jacobs and fourth runner-up Gabby Lucchese, Dilorenzo said.
Shelby also took home the Talent award and Gabby was honored with the Poise award.
“Shelby actually sang an original song and played along on the ukulele,” Dilorenzo said. “It was really cute.”
More than $13,000 was awarded in cash scholarships to the winners during this year’s program.
