GOSHEN — Construction on the new Ox Bow Tower is officially underway.

The Elkhart County Parks Department hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the tower at Ox Bow Park on Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 6.

Children from Ox Bow Elementary School were there to lend some muscle. The school helped raise about $4,000 for the reconstruction of the tower, which burned down in 2010 from arson.

Over the past four years, the parks department managed to raise about $134,600 for the new tower from its own funds, community donations and grants.

The tower will be built by Ancon Construction at a cost of around $120,000. The 32-foot tower will feature wider ramps and platforms, a handicap-accessible first level and a capacity load of 316 people, according to a press release.

The rest of the funds raised will pay for a parking lot. The parks department is still trying to raise money to build a bike rack, signage, security lighting and a spotting scope, according to the release.

The new Ox Bow Tower is expected to be ready by the end of the summer.
