ELKHART — Plans have been announced for a large-scale barbecue competition that will include music and other activities on Labor Day weekend.

The South Side Family Fun Fest will be Sunday, Aug. 31, and will include up to 30 contestants for a barbecue contest, as well as gospel music, live entertainment, vendors and a three-on-three basketball tournament.

The event is being organized by My Hood Needz Me and runs from 2 to 8 p.m. at Roosevelt Park.

The barbecue competition is open to all residents of the city, according to a news release issued Thursday.

Meat from the contest will then be sold as a fundraiser to help support plans for a weekly free family movie night at the Historic Roosevelt Center.

Grand prize for the competition is a new grill from Lowe’s. A people’s choice award will also be presented.

Entry fee is $25 and cooks can choose to grill chicken or ribs.

A musical stage will include local talent and feature a gospel tribute to the late Michael Hadley, an Elkhart fire fighter.

The basketball contest will have three categories – middle school, high school and adult for both genders.

For more information, contact Jermaine Sanders at 606-6233. For details concerning the basketball tournament, contact Robert Taylor at 226-4328.
