Celebrate Elkhart with a week of local festivities

    A week of events celebrating The Elkhart Truth’s 125 year anniversary will culminate in a block party Saturday, Aug. 9.

    Come celebrate the 125th anniversary of The Elkhart Truth with seven days of downtown festivities.

    Events begin Saturday, Aug. 2., and will culminate in a blowout block party Saturday, Aug. 9.

    Dog Daze of Summer
    5 to 10 p.m., Civic Plaza, 300 S. Main St.

    This event is presented by the Pillars of Elkhart to benefit the Humane Society of Elkhart County.

    There will be food vendors, live music and a beer garden. Entry cost is $5.

    Guests are asked to bring an item from the humane society’s wish list, available at www.elkharthumanesociety.org. In return, donors will receive a free gift from a local Elkhart business.

    Dogs are welcome — as long as they’re leashed and current on rabies vaccinations and other shots.

    SUNDAY, AUG. 3
    Outdoor Movie in the Garden

    2 p.m., Wellfield Botanic Gardens, 1011 N. Main St.

    Bring a blanket or lawn chairs to the garden screening of “Shrek” beginning at 2 p.m. 

    The cost is $5 for non-members, free for members and there’s a suggested $1 donation for children. Kona Ice will be available.

    TUESDAY, Aug. 5
    The Elkhart Truth’s tap party
    6 p.m., Iechyd da, 317 N Main St.

    Iechyd da will be tapping a brand new beer called “Truth Serum” to help The Elkhart Truth celebrate its 125th anniversary.

    Flavor 574 Tap Party
    6 p.m., New Paradigm, 600 S. Main Street

    A tap takeover featuring beers from Burn ’Em Brewing, of Michigan City, to celebrate The Elkhart Truth’s 125th anniversary.

    Kids Night
    6 to 9 p.m., Cubby Bear Pizza, 526 S. Main Street

    Offering a pizza special and frozen yogurt with cartoons on the big screen.

    FRIDAY, AUG. 8
    Paul Revere & The Raiders
    7:30 p.m., The Lerner Theater, 410 S. Main St.

    Tickets to see this party rock band are available online. There will be a wine and cheese after-party at 523 Tap & Grill.

    Block party, Main Street in downtown Elkhart
    Starting at 10 a.m.

    The block party will kick off at 10 a.m. with arts, crafts, vintage and handmade goods along Main Street.

    Saturday morning cartoons will be playing at The Lerner Theatre from 10:30 a.m. to noon, with a special guest appearance by The Man in the Yellow Hat.

    Street entertainment and kids activities begin at noon and last through 6 p.m., featuring an autograph session by the South Bend Silver Hawks, yoga activities by Yamafit and street chalk activities. 

    Outdoor stage entertainment begins at noon, featuring Raise The Bar Drum Line, Fairfield Jazz, Yamafit Dance, Bad Entertainment Dance Team, 3 Guys with Rhythm and That’s Dancing Studio.

    A beer garden will open 1 p.m. with craft beer provided by Iechyd Da Brewing Company (including the Truth Serum anniversary brew) and Bowly’s Crystal Bar. There is a $5 cover charge starting at 6 p.m.

    There will be food specials all day from Cubby Bear Pizza, New Paradigm and 523 Tap & Grill. Plus, The Weiner Shack’s new food truck will make an evening appearance serving gourmet dogs.

    Live music from local country singer-songwriter Zach Dubois starts at 7 p.m., and the Goshen based folk-rock band The Tumbleweed Jumpers take the stage at 9 p.m.
