ELKHART — Downtown Elkhart is taking its first stride in running stores. Two Rivers Running Co. will open July 17 as the city’s only running store.

Two Rivers will sell running and walking shoes, running apparel, nutritional supplements and running accessories.

The 1,300-square-foot shop will start off with five brands on its shelves (Brooks, New Balance, Inov8, Newton and Pearl Izumi) but will likely expand the selection with demand.

Owner Steve Peterson said he will also provide custom fitting and special orders to ensure local runners can find exactly what they are looking for.

Peterson also owns the Elkhart Bicycle Shop. Though not directly related, Two Rivers Running Co. will support and promote Two Rivers Running Club, according to Peterson.

He has been working 15-hour days for the last few weeks to make sure the inside of the new running store is ready for the big day and has spent more of that time redoing the interior himself.

Peterson said he chose to open the shop because so many friends and local runners wished they didn’t have to drive to Mishawaka (the location of the closest running store) for shoes and apparel.

“As a downtown business owner I am interested in keeping people in Elkhart,” says Peterson. “I am trying to bring more active lifestyle stuff to downtown.”

Two Rivers Running Co. will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The store is at 411 E. Jackson Blvd.
