County commissioners OK bids for 2014 summer paving program

Driving around Elkhart County will soon be a little less bumpy – in some areas, at least.

The Elkhart County Board of Commissioners on Monday, June 30, accepted bids from four contractors for the Elkhart County Highway Department’s summer paving program.

Paving is set to begin around July 7 and wrap up by Oct. 31, according to bidding documents.

Companies with accepted bids are Niblock Paving, Rieth-Riley Construction Company, Walsh & Kelly Inc., and Phend & Brown

The bids were separated into four groups of roads. 

The first group of paving projects includes:

  • C.R. 1 from C.R. 20 to north railroad entrance
  • C.R. 3 from C.R. 108 to C.R. 10
  • C.R. 12 from C.R. 101 to C.R. 3
  • C.R. 21 from C.R. 36 to C.R. 38
  • C.R. 28 from C.R. 9 to C.R. 11
  • C.R. 30 from S.R. 19 to C.R. 7
  • C.R. 30 from C.R. 15 to C.R. 17
  • Sunnyside Avenue from C.R. 45 to C.R. 13
  • Minuteman Way from C.R. 13 to CR 2.0.

Accepted bids for the first group of roads were: Niblock, $614,573.84; Rieth-Riley, $683,495.67; Walsh & Kelly, $706,891.34.

The second group of paving projects includes:

  • C.R. 2 from C.R. 21 North to C.R. 23
  • C.R. 4 from C.R. 19 to west end cul-de-sac
  • C.R. 6 from C.R. 17 to C.R. 19
  • C.R. 8 from C.R. 19 to Bristol city limits
  • C.R. 14 from C.R. 17 to C.R. 19 South
  • C.R. 19 from C.R. 14 to S.R. 120
  • C.R. 117 from C.R. 18 north to cul-de-sac near bypass
  • Forest Lakes Drive from S.R. 120 to Aspen Lane
  • C.R. 115 from C.R. 18 to bypass
  • C.R. 115 from C.R. 118 to C.R. 20
  • C.R. 39 from S.R. 120 to C.R. 10

Accepted bids for the second group of roads were: Niblock, $918,232.14;  Walsh & Kelly, $1,029,784.43; Rieth-Riley, $1,129,080.24. 

The third group of projects includes:

  • East County Line Road from C.R. 34 to C.R. 38
  • C.R. 33 from C.R. 34 to C.R. 36
  • C.R. 33 from C.R. 131 to S.R. 4
  • C.R. 35 from S.R. 4 to C.R. 36
  • C.R. 37 from C.R. 42 to C.R. 44
  • C.R. 146 from C.R. 23 to C.R. 25
  • C.R. 52 from C.R. 43 to C.R. 35
  • C.R. 27 from C.R. 40 to south end curve
  • C.R. 127 from C.R. 46 to C.R. 146
  • Canal Drive between Egbert Road and C.R. 40
  • C.R. 43 from C.R. 126 to C.R. 32

Accepted bids for the third group of roads were: Niblock, $1,399,339.60; Phend & Brown, $1,437,446.89; Walsh & Kelly, $1,476,249.53; Rieth-Riley, $1,539,136.90.

The fourth group includes:

  • C.R. 50 from S.R. 19 to C.R. 7
  • C.R. 52 from C.R. 7 to C.R. 9
  • C.R. 100 from U.S. 6 to the south county line
  • C.R. 54 from C.R. 15 to U.S. 6
  • C.R. 9 from C.R. 54 to U.S. 6
  • C.R. 17 from C.R. 40 to C.R. 142

Accepted bids for the fourth group of roads were: Niblock, $783,266.55; Walsh & Kelly, $807,466.68; Rieth-Riley, $836,098.83; Phend & Brown, $915,287.85.

Bids for the paving program are expected to be awarded at the next commissioners meeting Monday, July 7.

Other items

The commissioners on Monday awarded a bid for four new tandem axle dump trucks to Hill Truck Sales Inc., of South Bend for a total of $853,170. 

Two of the dump trucks were priced at $234,385 each, with the other two priced at $192,200 each.

Hill Truck Sales beat out Selking International of South Bend for the bids. Selking International offered four dump trucks for a total of $876,835.96.

The trucks are for use by the highway department.
