Should Elkhart do more to prevent potential lead exposure amid demolitions?

Elkhart mayor Dick Moore said in a statement that the demolition “is not creating any environmental concerns or issues”, but some residents are still cautious.

Some locals are concerned that lead is being distributed from dust clouds created by building demolitions on Prairie Street in Elkhart.

Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore said in a statement Friday, June 6, that lead paint and asbestos were found in some of the homes, and that asbestos was removed prior to the demolitions, which are being done to make way for the eventual construction of an overpass.

Moore in his statement maintained that the demolition “is not creating any environmental concerns or issues.” Crews have been spraying down the area with water to keep dust particles from becoming airborne.

Still, some feel more could be done to prevent potential lead contamination. Carolyn Hunt of Elkhart is organizing an informational campaign to spread the word about the dangers of lead poisoning to residents living near the demolition site.

What do you think? Is the city of Elkhart doing enough to protect citizens from lead exposure? If not, what else should be done?
