ELKHART — The city of Elkhart is seeking grant money from the U.S. Department of Justice in an attempt to reduce crime related to gun violence and gangs.

Elkhart‘s police department will be part of a joint application led by Indiana University-Northwest.

The grant applications will be submitted through the U.S. District Attorney’s office in Hammond.

If awarded, the grant will total $300,000 and Elkhart would receive $60,000 , according to the statement issued by Mayor Dick Moore’s office.

Money from the grant would be used to support local groups and individuals who would look to establish strategies to reduce crime associated with gang and guns, the statement said.
