ELKHART – Starting Tuesday morning, April 8, Eighth Street in Elkhart will be closed between Harrison and Mason streets. A small portion of Mason Street east of Eighth Street will be closed as well.
The roads will be closed for up to 90 days so the city can work on sewer and water lines in the area, Elkhart's Utility Engineer Tory Irwin said.
According to a letter the city sent to residents in the area, the project will include the construction of a separate storm sewer system, a new water main, a new sanitary sewer and work on roadways and sidewalks.
Irwin said the intersection of Eighth and Harrison streets will only be closed for a week or two, though the intersection of Eighth and Mason will be closed for the project's entire duration.
Cleve Epperson and Amber Hendricks, who live at 616 S. Eighth Street, said they're glad the improvements are being made, as it will help with their low water pressure. Both said the city has done a great job keeping residents informed.
"They're trying to make the transition as smooth as possible," Hendricks said. However, Hendricks and Epperson said they have wondered where some neighbors will park during the project.
On its Facebook page, the city recommended taking Franklin Street to avoid the construction.
