ELKHART — Help fill a school bus during The Elkhart Truth's food drive to prevent area children from going hungry over their spring break.
The food drive is a partnership between The Elkhart Truth, WNDU and Concord Mall to benefit children who live in homes where cupboards may be bare. Teachers and counselors will make sure all donations go directly to the children in need.
The food drive will take place at Concord Mall and Martin's Super Market on Concord Mall Drive on Saturday, March 29, but to make it easy for everyone, donations are also at The Elkhart Truth, 421 S. Second St, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 24-28 and after 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, at the Concord Mall customer service center.
Melodie Halvorsen, event organizer and executive assistant to the publisher at The Elkhart Truth, said, "The Elkhart Truth is a family-owned business and we like to give back to the community. This is one way we can help and encourage the community to participate too. These children can't help the circumstances they are in, but if we all do a little bit we might be able to make things better for them."
Ideal items to donate are non-perishables such as peanut butter, jam/jelly, crackers, cereal, instant oatmeal, granola bars, breakfast pastries such as Pop Tarts, ramen noodles, soup, hot cocoa mix, juice boxes, juice pouches, fruit snacks, canned fruit, canned tuna/chicken, canned pasta and canned stew. In addition to food, this drive is also collecting new socks and underwear.
The two new locations to collect food include inside of Martin's Super Market located at 201 Concord Mall Drive, Elkhart and Concord Mall's main entrance located at 3701 S. Main Street, Elkhart.
