GOSHEN — The Elkhart County Corrections Center will save close to $1 million throughout the next 10 years thanks to a decision by the Elkhart County Council to refinance some of the jail's bonds.

The commissioners made the decision unanimously after a presentation from H.J. Umbaugh & Associates, an accounting firm in Mishawaka.

“If we can pick up a million dollars in savings, we ought to pick up on that if we can,” said county council member David Hess.

The recommendation was largely based on current low interest rates.
