Elkhart Fire Department dyed the Elkhart River green this St. Patrick's Day weekend

Large volumes of water from the warm weather and snow melt made it difficult for the river to stay green, but that didn't stop the Elkhart Fire Department from getting festive.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, the Elkhart Fire Department dyed the river green on Saturday morning, March 15.

Large volumes of water from the warm weather and snow melt didn't keep the river green for long.

"It usually lasts a lot longer than this," said Shaun Edgerton, assistant chief with the Elkhart Fire Department.

He doesn't remember why they started using biodegradable dye to turn the river green three years ago, but it's fun and the community seems to enjoy it, he said.
