The Elkhart community rallied around Zach Talley, a teen who spent much of his life in and out of the hospital fighting a degenerative muscle disease.

Talley, who was diagnosed with ataxia-telangiectasia when he was 2 years old, died Saturday, Aug. 23 at Elkhart General Hospital, according to a pending obituary from Stemm-Lawson-Peterson Funeral Home

Members of the community organized fundraisers to help pay medical costs and get Talley a wheelchair-accessible van.

A group from the Elkhart Fire Department led by firefighter Kevin Alber volunteered to build a new bathroom at the family’s home, family friend Shanna Waterman launched “Rally for Talley” t-shirt sales and Talley’s Boy Scout troop 747 hosted a spaghetti dinner.
