Cougars dominate from start to finish

JIMTOWN — New Prairie played keep-away and Jimtown never caught up.

The Cougars looked worthy of being ranked among the best Class 4A teams in Indiana after a dominating 25-7 victory over the Jimmies at Knepp Field Friday, Sept. 20.

“We couldnt’ get them off the field. We had a great idea of where they’re going with the ball, but we were missing tackles,” said JHS coach Mike Campbell.

New Prairie ran for 209 yards, but held the Jimmies to four first downs, including just one — on a penalty — over the last three quarters of play. It was the Cougars’ first win at Jimtown since 1988.

Two early Jimtown mistakes proved hurtful. The Jims let a NP punt roll to the 4 and on their first snap, quarterback Marquise Schieber fumbled, setting up a 3-yard Tyler Weller scoring run.

The Jimmies got a break of their own when the Cougars muffed a punt and Casey Adams went in from the 1 seven plays, but Samuel Scott returned the ensuing kickoff 77 yards for a score and a 13-7 lead.

Jimtown never got close again as New Prairie, now 5-0 and 3-0 in the Northern State, dominated the ball and the clock. Fullback Wade Young and quarterback Zach Brassell ran the option with sure hands, pounding the ball at the weary Jims.

“It’s a tough part of the offense ... our quarterback has to be able to make his reads,” said Russ Radtke, New Prairie’s coach. “With Jimtown’s multiple four or five defense they come out in, you’ve got to be able to to change the audible and go to another play.”

Jimtown mustered only 80 yards of offense in falling to 3-2, 3-1 in the NSC.

“Another frustrating thing was we gave them some things. We didn’t want to kick the ball to 27 (Scott) and we did,” Campbell said, “and, of course, we didn’t want to fumble on the 4-yard line.”
