Lightning strikes local football

Jimtown, NorthWood games will be played Saturday.

There were a few lightning-strike type plays Friday, Aug 30, but most of the lightning was in the skies.

Of nine games involving Elkhart County area teams, the damage estimate went like this: Two games suspended until Saturday, three games delayed and eventually finished after 11 p.m. and four which managed to finish without delay.

In games which did finish, Elkhart Central cruised to a 42-14 victory at Goshen in a game which ended at 11:20 p.m.

At Concord, the Minutemen defeated Elkhart Memorial 38-7 in a contest which resumed after 11 p.m.

Jimtown’s Northern State Conference game with Glenn was suspended and will restart on Saturday, Aug. 31, at 9:30 a.m. The game started 30 minutes late and stopped again 8:20 p.m. after one quarter. The score is 0-0. Officials waited nearly two hours before suspending the contest.

At Nappanee, NorthWood leads Culver Academy 14-13 in the third quarter. That game will resume at 1 p.m. at Andrews Field.

Northridge went to 2-0 for the first time since 1992 with a 31-13 victory over South Bend Riley, Fairfield lost to Prairie Heights 32-14 and Penn buried Portage 32-0.

Marian’s game at New Prairie endured a lengthy delay at Rolling Prairie. New Prairie led 21-14 in a game which went to halftime around 11:25 p.m. while Wawasee’s game at South Bend St. Joseph was called in the second half with St. Joe leading 34-0.
