Falcons boast talent in the backfield

Fairfield also has 4 starters back on offensive line.

BENTON — Football coaches rarely make declaratory statements, especially in the preseason. Fairfield’s Bob Miller pulled no punches.

“I think this is the best group of running backs we’ve ever had,” Miller said this week. Remember, he said “group.”

The Falcons have rolled out some outstanding backs in recent years — Alic Vanover, Derrick Yoder, to name a few. Miller believes the trio of Cam Kitson, Tony Zook and Mitch DeWitt is the real deal.

“They are such well-rounded athletes and each one of they are incredibly elusive,” Miller said. “Kitson is flat-out fast ... he’s fun to watch. He’s gotten into the weight room and developed into an amazing athletes.

“Tony Zook, pound-for-pound, he’s the strongest guy on the team. When he gets to full speed, can plant that foot and go the other way just like that. And Mitch DeWitt, it’s one of those things where if he gets the ball in his hands, something is going to happen.”

So with only one football, Fairfield’s next task is figuring out a way to spread the wealth. The Falcons will need all the speed they can muster as they bid for their first Northeast Corner Conference championship since 2009.

And Miller’s club, resting comfortably in Class 3A, is packaged with, among others, Jimtown and Culver Academies, its Week 9 opponent this year, when the sectional starts in October.

A seasoned offensive line with four starters — Tyler Hostetler and Reece Miller at guards and Andrew Hagar and JoDean Mill at tackle — could mean another big offensive fall.

“I think our biggest strength is running the football,” Miller said. “I think we’ll be fairly balanced, but we also know we’ve got kids who can run. That and the offensive line, we’ve got four kids who’ve started since they were sophomores.”
