FORT WAYNE — Northridge lost a tightly fought Fort Wayne Concordia Semistate championship match to Carroll 4-1 on Saturday, May 25, though the Raiders’ No. 1 pair of Olivia Erekson and Courtney Clark won to earn a spot in the individual doubles tourney field.
Two of the No. 10-ranked Chargers’ points came on courts that featured tiebreakers, as Sarah Smith dropped a 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) decision at No. 1 singles, and the duo of Emily Erekson and Mackenzie Martin a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 match at 2 doubles.
“It didn’t fall our way today, but that doesn’t take away from our season as a whole,” Northridge coach Angie Brenneman said. “The girls had a great season. It might’ve helped prepare us a little better if (the Homestead match during the regular season hadn’t been canceled due to rain). Maybe we get a little further down the road, but we accomplished a lot.”
Carroll improved to 22-2 and earned a spot in next weekend’s State Finals quarterfinals.
The Raiders closed at 14-2, their lone regular-season loss being 4-1 against No. 4-ranked Penn. Northridge won NLC round-robin and tournament titles to go with sectional and regional crowns.
The next opponent for Clark and Olivia Erekson (18-4) remains to be determined.
