Girls Tennis Concord, NW teaming up to ‘smash cancer’

A rainbow of colors will be on display April 12, and a donation of about $2,000 will be made.

DUNLAP — When Indiana Hall of Fame coach Tim Cleland brought some of his Delta High School girls tennis players to demonstrate drills at a statewide coaches’ clinic last February, the drills weren’t necessarily what struck a chord most with Concord coach Jan Soward.

“They also talked about this ‘Smash Cancer’ event that they held last year, and I’ve never seen players so excited about doing something as they were about that,” Soward said Monday, April 8.

So Soward decided to see if her own players might get just as excited over organizing such an effort.

And they have.

When the Minutemen host Northern Lakes Conference foe NorthWood on Friday, April 12, the match will be dubbed “Smash Cancer: Putting The Rivalry Aside.”

Concord players have sold nearly 400 T-shirts in anticipation of Friday’s match, and though they’re the visitors, the Panthers have gotten on board and sold approximately another 135. T-shirts were priced at $10.

The two teams have about 50 players between them.

“Tif (Schwartz, NorthWood coach) was at the same clinic, and I said, ‘Why don’t we do this together,’ and we went from there,” Soward said.

Proceeds from the T-shirt sales will be donated to United Cancer Services of Elkhart County. Soward anticipates a donation of about $2,000.

Fans who did not buy a shirt will still have an opportunity to make a contribution at the match.

Players from both schools will wear the T-shirts that were available in 16 different colors, representing a wide range of cancers.

“It’s amazing how many different cancers there are,” said Soward, herself a breast cancer survivor. “It seems like it touches every family out there now.”

Players from each team will be honoring designated cancer survivors or members of families who have lost a loved one to cancer.

“Part of doing this event was to help teach our students the life skill of how to run a benefit,” Soward said, “and I’m just really proud of everybody who’s been involved. What the girls have been able to do amazes me.”
