Cold shooting is Westview’s downfall in sectional title loss

Two-time defending sectional champion Westview falls to LaVille in the title game.

TOPEKA — It was as if someone had fixed an invisible seal over Westview’s basket at halftime.

The Warriors jogged off the court with a 21-17 lead over visiting LaVille after the first half of the Class 2A Westview Sectional championship game, shooting a sliver less than 50 percent from the field.

When the team returned, no amounts of Westview (20-4) whistling rallies off the court or relentless efforts on the court could buy it a bucket. The two-time defending sectional champions shot 6 for 26 in the second half — including 1 for 9 in the third quarter — to fall to LaVille 44-36.

“Give LaVille a lot of credit for playing well, but I feel like we got pretty good shots,” Westview coach Rob Yoder said. “The areas that we got to take a lot of shots from are areas you gotta make if you want to win in a game like that. We didn’t make them.”

Jordyn Bontrager epitomized Westview’s night-and-day shooting between halves. The junior hit his first four shots and all three free throws to enter halftime with 12 points. He was 0 for 6 from the field in the second half. Kyle Miller, who averages 14.7 points per game for Westview, struggled to finish with seven.

“They want to do good,” Yoder said of his team. “They really want to try hard. But sometimes things don’t go your way, but it’s not from lack of effort.”

Andrew Hostetler led LaVille (18-6) with 15 points.
