Panthers, Vikings move on to semifinals at Wawasee

It's Panthers-Falcons, Vikings-Lakers Friday.
Posted on Feb. 26, 2013 at 12:00 a.m.

SYRACUSE — NorthWood pulled away in the second half and Tippecanoe Valley asserted its authority early Tuesday night as the Class 3A Wawasee Sectional boys basketball team opened.

The Panthers (15-6) used a 14-3 run late in the third quarter and early in the fourth on the way to beating West Noble 59-40 and earning a date with Fairfield (11-11) in the first semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday, March 1.

The Vikings (18-3) scored the first nine points en route to a 65-42 win against Wawasee and a spot in Friday’s second semifinal against Lakeland (6-15). The championship is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday March 2.

In early December, NorthWood topped Fairifeld 65-37 and Tippecanoe Valley bested Lakeland 71-36.

NorthWood coach Aaron Wolfe said his team’s ability to convert shots after missed West Noble perimeter shots helped the Panthers pull away Tuesday.

“We were fortunate they did not make their free throws (in the second half),” said Wolfe, who watched the Chargers go 8-of-15 from the stripe.

Jonathan Wilkinson (20 points), Zach Zurcher (12) and Will Stueve (11) paced NorthWood.

“Jon Wilkinson was the X Factor,” said Wolfe. “He brought energy and leadership which we needed.”

Wilkinson, who also led his club with eight rebounds, tossed in seven points in the first quarter and eighth in the third period.

Zurcher tallied six points in the third quarter and Stueve canned seven in the second period for the Panthers.

Tommy Klem pulled down seven rebounds to go with six points for NorthWood.

The Panthers led the Chargers 30-23 at halftime.

“The first half of play (in the sectional) is always difficult,” said Wolfe. “It’s the first time all season that we’re playing for the season.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for West Noble, coach (Jim) Best and their athletic program. Their kids played hard and were disruptive at times.”

Phil Miller (13 points) led the way for West Noble (15-6). Ten of Miller’s points came in the first half.

West Noble was playing without four regulars from the regular season. Drew Schermerhorn was out with a broken ankle while Brandon Evans, Keith Gibson and Nick Noe were suspended for breaking team rules. At full strength, the Chargers beat the Panthers 63-60 in Ligonier in late January.

In the nightcap, Wawasee (5-16) saw a season in which it had no seniors on the sectional roster come to a close against a team it lost 78-48 to last Friday, Feb. 22.

“At this age, it’s more about fundamentals than X’s and O’s,” said Warriors coach Phil Mishler. “We made a couple of bad decisions and when you are playing a possession game like that, you can’t afford to mess up once.”

Mishler said his team’s defensive aim was to restrict the inside catches by Tanner Andrews which the Warriors managed to do at times.

“Offensive rebounds hurt us and they just sort of broke it open,” said Mishler.

Andrews (16 points), Ben Shriver (12) and Alex Thacker (12) led Tippy Valley. Andrews scored 12 points in the second half. Shriver canned nine in the first half. Thacker sank two of his three 3-pointers and scored eight in the third quarter.

Wawasee was paced by Jake Hutchinson (11) and Alex Clark (11).

Hutchinson tossed in three 3-pointers. He scored eight points in the second half. Clark tallied seven points in the middle two periods.
