4A Girls Regional Warsaw pulls away from Kingsmen late

Buhr notches 18 and nine as Penn girls close 19-5.

VALPARAISO — Junior Nikki Grose scored 22 points with 9-of-10 field goal shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds as Warsaw eliminated Penn 49-42 in a Class 4A Valparaiso Regional girls basketball semifinal Saturday, Feb. 16.

The Kingsmen closed to within 37-35 with 4:25 to play on an 8-0 run, but the Tigers answered that with an 8-1 spurt to put the game away.

Junior Caroline Buhr led Penn with 18 points and nine rebounds, but the two-time defending regional champion Kingsmen were just 15-of-50 from the field overall, including 0-of-11 outside the arc, while Warsaw shot 16-of-31 from the field.

The No. 8-ranked Tigers (23-1), who also beat Penn 55-42 during the regular season, won a regional contest for the first time since 2004 and advanced to the final later in the evening against No. 5 Merrillville (23-1).

Penn closed at 19-5.
