NAPPANEE — No. 3-ranked NorthWood used its size advantage and multifaceted offensive attack Tuesday, Feb. 5 to beat Northern Lakes Conference foe Wawasee 53-29 in the opener of the Class 3A NorthWood Sectional girls basketball tournament.

Led by Morgan Olson’s 20 points and 17 rebounds and Jordyn Frantz’s 15 points, seven rebounds and five blocks, the Black Swish (20-3) beat the Warriors and earned a berth in Friday’s 6 p.m. semifinal against Fairfield (13-8). The other semifinal will pit Lakeland (5-15) against West Noble (15-7). The Chargers edged Tippecanoe Valley 60-58 in Tuesday’s other game.

NorthWood enjoyed a 37-20 rebounding edge and attacked Wawasee’s tightly-packed, triangle-and-two offense with plenty of inside points from Olson, Taylor Fielstra (8) and Savannah Bley (4 to go with eight rebounds) and outside baskets from Frantz (three 3-pointers) and Fielstra (two treys).

“We’ve got some people who can shoot,” said Black Swish coach Steve Neff.

NorthWood led 16-3 at the end of the first quarter and 24-9 at halftime.

“That’s a state contender team right there,” said Wawasee coach Kem Zolman of the Black Swish. “We’ve been there and know what that looks like.”

Zolman said his team’s best chance against NorthWood was the zone defense.

“With a team like that you really have give and take,” said Zolman. “You pack it in and really make them work inside.”

KiLee Knafel, the area’s leading scorer at 24.6 points per game coming in, finished her career with 19 to go with a team-best eight rebounds for Wawasee (10-11). The IUSB recruit scored nine points in the fourth quarter.

“Fielstra did a real good job on Knafel,” said Neff. “When she got tired, we switched to Inger (Yoder). (Knafel) had to work to get her shots.”

Neff praised Frantz for her improvement since the beginning of the season.

“She’s seeing the floor so much better,” said Neff.

Zolman’s Warriors lose Knafel, Alexis Blunk and Cassie Martinez to graduation.

“This senior class has seen highs and lows,” said Zolman, who coached Wawasee to its most-recent sectional title in 2011.

NorthWood topped Fairfield 62-21 during the regular season, but the Falcons were not at full strength in that game and it was seven weeks ago.

“(Fairfield) has a hard-working bunch,” said Neff. “They’ll put their nose in your belly button.”
