JIMTOWN — NorthWood keeps expanding its margins of victory, but now for the progressing Panthers, it’s onward to the Northern Lakes Conference race.

NorthWood set up a showdown of unbeatens by cruising past host Jimtown 69-39 in boys high school basketball Tuesday night.

At 4-0, the Panthers are off to their best start in seven years as they head into Friday’s NLC opener at 5-0 Plymouth.

“They’ve got some quickness, certainly have some athleticism as part of that quickness, and they’ve got some very good experience, but they’ve also just flat got some good players,” Jimmie coach Ron Dietz said of NorthWood. “You’ve got to credit them. They execute both their offenses and defenses very efficiently.”

Zach Zurcher scored 16 points, Jonathan Wilkinson 13, Kyle McCoy nine and Will Stueve eight — each of those four players being juniors — as the Panthers spread the wealth and shot 60 percent from the field.

Freshman Braxton Linville came off the bench to blend a game-high five assists with five points, four rebounds and a game-high three steals for the winners.

“It bodes well for us that our guys are unselfish,” said NorthWood coach Aaron Wolfe, whose club dished 17 assists Tuesday and has now won its games by — in order — four, nine, 28 and 30 points. “We have a number of guys who can contribute offensively, and they have been very efficient this year.”

Just as the Panthers were multiple with their sources of offense, so were they with their styles of defense. They showed a 2-3 zone at the start, but trapped aggressively out of it, then later went to man. Each was effective.

“We have been working on multiple defenses, and we’re trying to become more sound in all of them,” said Wolfe, whose team finished with 12 steals. “It’s been a slow and steady process. We made some strides tonight, but we still have room to grow.”

NorthWood led 31-14 by halftime and 48-25 through three quarters on its way to dropping the Jims to 2-3.

“We told the kids this would be a true test to see where we’re at,” Dietz said. “And then (afterwards), I told them, ‘OK, you took a licking, but keep ticking, keep working hard, keep coming back, keep trying.’ We took a step back tonight, but I like our kids, and as they progress through the system, I think we’ll be fine.”

Freshman Adam DeShone and senior Michael Hobbs led Jimtown with 12 points apiece.

Junior Chase Hoeflinger, the Jimmies’ leading scorer on the season going into the evening at 12.0 per outing, battled foul trouble throughout the game and finished with two points, while senior Alec Brown, projected to be the team’s point guard this season, missed a fifth straight game due to a high ankle sprain.

Dietz said Brown likely won’t be back until after Christmas.
