Kyle Johnson, Derrick DeShone and Tyler Leighton remember growing up together on and off the court. It was a familiarity they said took their team to the IHSAA Class 2A boys basketball state championship title in 2004.
"It was a family, it was a community state championship just because of how connected everyone on that team was," said Deshone.
Those connections were still strong ten years later when the team was honored during halftime at Jimtown's home game against LaVille Friday, Feb. 28. Watching the game on a TV near the concession stand, former Jimtown head coach and current Assistant Principal Randy DeShone still gets worried.
"Even though it's on tape and I know what's going to happen, I still get nerves in my stomach," said Randy DeShone.
Community and teamwork are traits found throughout Elkhart County's basketball family. In this first installment of this month's History in Headlines, we look back at the Jimmies' state championship.
