ELKHART — Police confirmed a man died as a result of a shooting on the south side of Elkhart on Monday afternoon, Dec. 23.

Officers from the Elkhart Police Department responded to reports of a shooting at about 2:45 p.m. Monday in the 1300 block of Prairie Street.

Devonte J. Patrick, 18, of Elkhart was taken to Elkhart General Hospital with at least one gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A parking lot in the 1300 block of Prairie Street was taped off in response to the shooting. Prairie Street was blocked between Indiana and Chapman avenues while police worked at the scene.

Nelson Kraybill, the lead pastor at Prairie Street Mennonite Church, said the congregation is planning a 45-minute Christmas Eve service at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 24, where it will sing carols and read Scriptures. Following the service, members will go outside for a candlelight vigil to pray for the victim's and perpetrator's families.

Kraybill said he wanted to extend the invitation to the community to join the church during its service or vigil.

“We have decided to pretty much do our usual service,” Kraybill said. “It's not going to be a lament, it's going to be about Christ being born, but (the shooting is) going to be on everybody's mind.”

Kraybill said no one from his congregation was in the church when the incident happened. He heard about the shooting about two hours later, when his daughter told him she drove by the church and saw the taped-off parking lot.

Police investigating the slayings of seven women whose bodies were found in northwestern Indiana say the suspect has told them that he may have killed people going back 20 years. The Lake County prosecutor's office on Monday charged 43-year-old Darren Vann in the strangulation death of 19-year-old Afrikka Hardy. Police say her body was found Friday night at a Motel 6 in Hammond. Police say Vann provided information that led authorities to the bodies of the six other women in the nearby city of Gary, Indiana.
