A high school football player comes 4,000 miles to find another rivalry with Bremen

A high school football player traveled 4,000 miles to have a similar rival with a town of the same name.

Hannes Krogmann came to Jimtown High School as an exchange student from Hamburg, Germany this fall. He never imagined that more than 4,000 miles away from home, he'd still find himself in the middle of an intense sports rivalry with a town named Bremen. In Germany, Hamburg and Bremen are cities close to one another and each has pro soccer teams which are huge rivals. In a tweet this week Krogmann noted, "There is a city in Germany called Bremen and they are the biggest rivals of our soccer team.. And they are green too!!" That's kinda cool."

Small world, indeed. Krogmann has nine years of soccer in his background as well as rugby as a high schooler. There are versions of American tackle football in Germany, he says, but only in club teams. Between that exposure and watching on ESPN, he says he knew what football was before traveling to Baugo. Entering tonight's game, he's converted 27 of 29 PATs, including 25 straight. His last miss was against Glenn in Week 2. He says that rugby has more full contact, "So it's pretty tough." ... Once he steps on the field the Lions and Jimmies, he may find out the hard way that rugby isn't so tough after all.

Tournament Time: The IHSAA will stage its annual football tournament pairings show on Sunday, Oct. 13 from 7-8:30 p.m. The show can be found on 102.7 The Fan out of Warsaw, the only station in the immediate Elkhart County area market to air the broadcast. Fans can also follow on  a live stream provided by the IHSAA Network. The addition of a 6A class, schools jumping to other classes and a general reshuffling of sectional groupings will make this one of the most anticipated  pairings in a long time.

Friday, Oct. 11 games: Northridge at Concord. Whodathunkit? This will be the most raucous Raider road trip in school history. The Minutemen are playing at home with its big band, huge crowd and angry football team. Concord's beat up. Northridge is trying to keep level heads. The Minutemen will need to throw the ball over the Raiders' heads a few times, but to do that, they'll have to find a reasonable run game and pass protect CHS quarterback Trevor Wilmore. In a game closer than most will expect, Concord wins. I will be there.

Around the area ... Jimtown will have to dial it up to beat Bremen ... I fear Shaq Vann and Adams will run past Elkhart Central ... Wawasee has too much offense for Elkhart Memorial ... Goshen won't get it done at Plymouth ... NorthWood will get it done at Warsaw ... Fairfield is a roll and squeak out one at Busco ... and more in the NIC, Penn will throttle Riley and Mishawaka will stuff Marian.
