Who would want to hack into our high school football online poll -- twice?

Who would want to hack our online poll?

    Posted on Oct. 10, 2013 at 1:00 a.m. | Updated on Oct. 10, 2013 at 2:11 p.m.

I've heard of being "hacked'' .. but a double-hack? Strange, but very true. On our www.elkharttruth.com prep sports page, we have a High School Football Player of the Week promo. Started it this season with an online voting engine. Enjoyed the surprising success and interest from readers, but when the vote totals showed more than 17,000 on Monday, up to 36,000+ early Wednesday and more than 60,000 by Wednesday afternoon, we knew the fix was in.

High School Football Player of the Week

    • Concord: Jarrell Pointdexter - Cought 8 passes for 153 yards and 4 TDs in a loss at Plymouth (0%)
    • Fairfield: Forrest Glogouski - Caught TD passes of 54 and 72 yards, blocked a punt in win over Lakeland (43%)
    • Jimtown: Nik Olson - 6 carries, 134 yards and 2 TDs in a victory over Culver. (57%)

    Total Voters: 60,710

This wasn't your typical Facebook "hack'' where a teenager steals her father's iPhone and types, "I have the best daughter in the whole world!!!'' in his status. No, we not only had one, but two Internet addresses showing excessive votes to our feed. Busted. Nik Olson of Jimtown and Forrest Glogouski of Fairfield were dominating the voting so much that Concord's Jarrell Pointdexter barely moved the percentage totals. With that, we laughed, shook our heads and our IT staff pulled the plug on it Wednesday afternoon.

We will know more later on whether we'll post another poll or not. Truth be known, we love the fact that two factions of fans thought our modest poll was worthy of techno shenanigans, but let's play fair next time, OK? Cool.

    Conference Standings

With two weeks left, three of our four core conference titles are still up for grabs. Only New Prairie in the NSC looks to have a clear path to a trophy. The rest? Nothing close to being settled, though Friday's games could set up a series of winner-take-all scenarios next week. The biggest game in the area is Northridge's upstart Raiders heading to Dunlap to take on Concord, which is stinging from two straight losses. Both squads are 4-1 in the NLC along with Warsaw. The Tigers, who play at home to NorthWood this week, travel to Dunlap next Friday.

The NIC is the same way with Penn and Mishawaka each at 4-0 with a Week 9 date pending at Mishawaka. The Cavemen are on the road to rival Marian while Penn gets Riley at home. And in the NECC, Fairfield could forge a three-way tie by beating Churubusco on the road. It's the last league for the Falcons while Lakeland and 'Busco meet next week.

Check John Harrell's Indiana website for complete statewide conference standings.
