ELKHART — The former Mad Anthony’s property could have a new owner within a few weeks.
Steve Hill confirmed Friday, Jan. 10, that he and his brother, Frank Hill, are buying the former restaurant and bar at 526 S. Main St. They hope to turn it into a family restaurant.
“We’re looking to create a Shakey’s environment,” he said.
Frank Hill is a chef and has worked in Las Vegas, Steve Hill said. They hope to offer pizza, salads and sandwiches, as well as do catering and host birthday parties. They hope to separate the bar from the rest of the dining room with some walls. Steve said they hope they can open as soon as April 1.
Details of the sale are being finalized. First State Bank has owned the property and Ross Miller of FM Stone Commercial has been the listing agent. The asking price was $589,000, Miller said.
The building has 6,200 square feet as a restaurant with a lot of equipment and also has three apartments upstairs, Miller said.
It’s been nearly three years since the restaurant closed. Mad Anthony’s Old State Ale House opened with much excitement in December 2008 following an extensive renovation. It was once a theater and prior to being a restaurant was the site of Faith Mission.
Following the closing, First State Bank foreclosed on the loan. It went to Elkhart County Sheriff’s sale in October 2011, but the bank kept the property. Miller has listed it since December 2011.
Hill said he and his brother will release more details on their plans in the coming weeks.
