Cappy's Northside is closed, but will reopen.
The bar closed last week but Merle and Linda Anderson, who have a long track record of success at Pete's Simonton Lake Tavern, are taking it over.
Linda's grandfather, Dominic Cappelletti, opened Cappy's, which was first on Harrison Street and then moved to 1000 N. Michigan St., Elkhart. The family retained ownership, but someone else has been running it and it had fallen on hard times.
Merle said they need to get insurance, but will operate it as a restaurant as soon as they can. “We really want to get it back to restaurant dining,” he said.
And he said they're going to make it work. “That's the bottom line. We are going to make this work.”

Ÿ Pop Culture doesn't have a storefront in downtown Elkhart anymore, but has coolers in Mini Delights Bake Shoppe in Elkhart and Ignition Music in Goshen. Owner Brian Jamison said he had a month-to-month lease on the Main Street store and someone else wanted the location. So he's in the two other locations, and a candy shop in Carmel.
Ÿ Winter Restaurant Week starts today, Jan. 21, in downtown South Bend and continues through Feb. 3. Eleven restaurants will offer $30 specials — either two meals for that or three courses. A few restaurants are offering breakfast, some are offering lunch and 10 are offering dinner specials, according to Mark McDonnell, owner of LaSalle Grill and one of the main organizers of Eat Drink Downtown South Bend group. The group's goal is to bring people downtown to eat. You can find menus and more information online.
Ÿ Pizza Depot and Stoney Creek Winery are teaming up to have a Valentine's Day prime rib dinner on Feb. 11. The cost is $50 per couple and will include shrimp cocktail, prime rib, potato, salad, beverage, dessert and wine tasting. Reservations for the event at Pizza Depot, 104 S. Jefferson St., Millersburg, are needed by Thursday, Jan. 31, and can be made by calling 574-642-4229, according to a press release.
Ÿ Two McDonald's managers got the Ray Kroc Award last week, given based on performance in the top 1 percent of managers in the United States. Hilda Arias, manager of the Nappanee Street location in Elkhart, and Susie Hendrickson, manager of the LaGrange location, were honored. Arias has been manager of the Elkhart location since 2008 and was an assistant manager starting in 2004. Hendrickson started her McDonald's career in Elkhart in 1984 and retired in 2005, but returned in 2006 and became the LaGrange manager in 2009, according to a press release.
Ÿ Bristol Public Library, 505 W. Vistula St., is having a fundraiser pie contest and sale Monday, Jan. 28. Judging will take place at noon. Entries are due between 10 and 11:45 a.m. Registration is $2 per entry for cream or fruit/nut pies, according to Dawn Janssen, president of the Friends of the Bristol Public Library.
Ÿ Zach Lucchese,former chef at Lucchese's, has a new job as executive chef at Swan Lake Country Club, Plymouth. He said he'll be overseeing a revamp of the kitchen and is excited about the new job.
Ÿ The episode of “Dinner and a Book” I taped with Gail Martin at WNIT-TV is set to air at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 26. We discussed “The Pint Man” and also talked to Summer Lewis of Iechyd Da Brewing Co. in Elkhart.
